How to Vet an IVF Clinic Abroad
The gap between the best and worst IVF clinics abroad is enormous. Accreditation, lab standards, and transparency are the filters that separate clinics worth trusting from clinics worth avoiding.
Vetting a clinic in another country can feel daunting, but it comes down to verifiable facts rather than marketing claims. Here's what to look for and how to confirm it.
Accreditation: what it means and what to look for
Accreditation means an independent body has audited the clinic's facilities, protocols, and outcomes against an international standard. The most recognized accreditations for fertility clinics abroad are JCI (Joint Commission International), which is the gold standard for hospital and clinic accreditation worldwide, and ISO certification for laboratory quality management.
National-level accreditations also matter. In Spain, clinics are regulated by the Sociedad Española de Fertilidad. In the Czech Republic, clinics must be registered with the State Institute for Drug Control. In Colombia, clinics need Habilitación from the Ministry of Health.
You can verify most accreditations online through the accrediting body's website. If a clinic claims JCI accreditation, search the JCI directory to confirm.
Lab standards: where the science happens
The embryology laboratory is where IVF outcomes are determined. A state-of-the-art consultation room means nothing if the lab behind it is substandard.
Key lab quality indicators include time-lapse embryo monitoring systems (like EmbryoScope), which allow continuous observation without disturbing embryos; vitrification capability for embryo and egg freezing, as this is the modern standard with significantly better survival rates than slow freezing; clean room certification with HEPA filtration and volatile organic compound control; and dedicated, full-time embryologists rather than shared or part-time lab staff.
Ask: "How many embryologists work in your lab full-time, and what is their training background?" A strong lab has at least 2–3 dedicated embryologists with international training credentials.
Success rate verification
Clinics self-reporting success rates is like students grading their own exams. The data isn't necessarily wrong, but independent verification changes the picture substantially.
In some countries, clinics are required to report outcomes to national registries. Spain's Registro Nacional de Actividad is publicly searchable. The UK's HFEA publishes clinic-level data. In countries without mandatory reporting — including Colombia, Mexico, and Turkey — you're relying on clinic-provided data, which makes the other verification steps more important.
When reviewing success rates, always ask for live birth rate per embryo transfer (not pregnancy rate), data broken down by patient age group, the specific treatment type the data applies to, and the sample size and time period.
Transparency indicators
Trustworthy clinics share information freely. They publish their medical team's credentials and training backgrounds on their website, provide detailed cost breakdowns before you commit, respond to inquiries within 24–48 hours with substantive answers, offer free initial consultations (remote or in-person), and are willing to share patient references or connect you with former patients.
Warning signs
Be cautious of clinics that only show testimonials on their own website with no independent reviews, have no named doctors on their website or refuse to tell you who will manage your cycle, offer prices dramatically below the market range without explanation, claim success rates above 70–80% for own-egg IVF in patients over 35, pressure you to commit quickly or offer "limited-time" pricing, or have a slick marketing operation but slow or evasive communication when you ask specific medical questions.
The simplest test: Send the clinic three specific medical questions about your situation. How quickly they respond, how substantively they answer, and whether they try to sell you before understanding your case tells you most of what you need to know.
