The Complete IVF Travel Checklist
Traveling for IVF abroad involves more planning than a typical trip, but it doesn't need to be overwhelming. This checklist covers everything from medical documents to practical comfort items.
Medical documents
- Complete fertility medical history (previous tests, treatments, diagnoses)
- Recent blood work results (within 3–6 months: AMH, FSH, estradiol, TSH, complete blood count)
- Recent ultrasound reports (antral follicle count, uterine evaluation)
- Semen analysis results (if applicable, within 3 months)
- Infectious disease screening results (HIV, Hepatitis B/C, syphilis — most clinics require these within 6–12 months)
- Previous IVF cycle reports with protocol details, embryo grades, and outcomes
- Medication list (current prescriptions and supplements)
- Clinic confirmation letter with appointment dates and treatment plan
- Your coordinator's contact information (phone, WhatsApp, email)
- Travel insurance policy documentation
Medications
- All prescribed fertility medications in their original packaging
- A doctor's letter confirming the medications are prescribed to you (for customs)
- Insulated cooler bag with ice packs for temperature-sensitive medications
- Extra medication supply (2–3 additional days) in case your cycle timing shifts
- Sharps container for needle disposal if self-injecting
- Any regular prescription medications you take daily
Medication tip: Pack all medications in your carry-on luggage, never in checked bags. Temperature extremes in the cargo hold can damage fertility medications. If your clinic is dispensing medications on-site, confirm this before packing.
Travel logistics
- Passport valid for at least 6 months beyond your travel dates
- Flexible or refundable flight bookings (cycle timing may shift by 1–3 days)
- Accommodation near the clinic — ask your coordinator for recommendations
- Airport transfer arrangements or reliable transportation to/from the clinic
- International phone plan or local SIM card for communication
- Power adapter for your destination country
- Copies of all important documents (digital and paper)
Comfort and wellbeing
- Loose, comfortable clothing for procedure days (avoid tight waistbands)
- Warm socks and a light layer for the clinic (treatment rooms can be cold)
- Entertainment for waiting and recovery (books, tablet, downloaded shows)
- Comfort food or snacks you enjoy (familiar food can ease anxiety)
- Journal or notebook for notes and questions
- Supportive companion if possible — having someone with you makes a significant emotional difference
Financial preparation
- Confirm total costs and payment schedule with the clinic in writing
- Notify your bank of international travel to avoid card blocks
- Carry a backup payment method (second credit card, cash reserve)
- Understand currency exchange rates and any foreign transaction fees
- Set aside a contingency fund (10–15% above planned costs) for unexpected expenses
Before you leave
- Complete all pre-treatment tests and send results to your overseas clinic
- Confirm your appointment schedule and arrival timing with your coordinator
- Arrange coverage at work and for any dependents or pets at home
- Download offline maps and translation apps for your destination
- Save your clinic's address and phone number in your phone — and write it on paper as backup
