Questions to Ask Any IVF Clinic Before You Book
A clinic's willingness to answer direct questions clearly and completely tells you more than any brochure. If the answers feel evasive or sales-driven, that's your signal to keep looking.
We've compiled the questions that matter most, organized by category. Not every question applies to every situation — but the ones that apply to yours should get clear, specific answers.
Cost and pricing transparency
Cost surprises are the most common complaint from IVF patients abroad. The clinic quote and the final bill can diverge significantly if you don't ask the right questions upfront.
- What is the all-in cost for my specific treatment, including medications, monitoring, blood work, and lab fees?
- What is not included in the quoted price? (Anesthesia, ICSI, embryo freezing, PGT, storage fees?)
- What is your cancellation and refund policy if my cycle is cancelled mid-treatment?
- Do you offer package pricing, and what does the package specifically include?
- What payment methods do you accept, and when are payments due?
- Are there any additional charges if I need a frozen embryo transfer in a future cycle?
Success rates and outcomes
Success rates are the most manipulated metric in fertility marketing. The right questions force specificity.
- What is your live birth rate per embryo transfer for my age group (not pregnancy rate, not clinical pregnancy rate)?
- Are your success rates independently verified or self-reported?
- How many cycles of my specific treatment type did you perform last year?
- What is your cancellation rate (cycles started but not completed)?
- Do you report results to a national registry or international body?
Why this matters: A "pregnancy rate" of 65% and a "live birth rate" of 42% describe the same clinic. Always ask for live birth rates per transfer, broken down by age group.
Medical team and protocols
- Who is the reproductive endocrinologist who will manage my cycle, and what is their training background?
- Will the same doctor see me throughout, or does the clinic rotate specialists?
- What stimulation protocol do you recommend for my situation, and why?
- Do you customize protocols based on my history, or use a standard approach?
- What lab technology do you use? (Time-lapse embryo monitoring, vitrification technique, etc.)
Logistics and coordination
- Will I have a dedicated English-speaking coordinator for my entire treatment?
- How does remote monitoring work — can I do initial blood work and scans at home?
- How long will I need to be at the clinic in person?
- What happens if my cycle timing shifts — how flexible are you with scheduling?
- Do you coordinate with my home physician for follow-up care?
- What are your communication channels and response times? Can I reach someone on evenings and weekends?
Legal and ethical
- What are the legal requirements for my treatment in this country? (Marital status, age limits, eligibility?)
- If I'm using donor gametes, what are the donor screening and selection procedures?
- Is donation anonymous or identity-release? What information will I have about my donor?
- What happens to unused embryos? What are my options for storage, donation, or disposal?
- Can you provide documentation for parentage recognition in my home country?
Red flags
Walk away from any clinic that guarantees pregnancy outcomes, refuses to share success rate data, pressures you into an immediate decision, quotes prices that seem significantly lower than competitors without a clear explanation, or communicates poorly or slowly during the inquiry process. If they're hard to reach before you've paid, they'll be harder to reach after.
